Galaxy Nexus and Android Ice Cream Sandwich

The Galaxy Nexus is the latest collaboration between Samsung and Google, designed to show off the latest version of Android – Ice Cream Sandwich. The phone includes some of the best hardware from Samsung, including a 4.65 inch Super AMOLED screen with HD resolution, and also introduces some excellent new features to the most popular mobile OS.

Samsung has taken many ideas for the Galaxy Nexus from the bestselling Galaxy S2, which has been the biggest selling Android phone of all time and widely regarded as the tech product of the year.

The screen was one of the biggest selling points of the Galaxy S2, and with the Galaxy Nexus Samsung has tried to extend this further. The screen is larger, making it better suited for videos and web browsing, and comes with the largest resolution ever found on a smartphone.

Even though it is a larger phone, Samsung has managed to give it the appearance of being quite petite by using rounded corners. Like the S2, it is also a very slim phone, ensuring that it doesn’t impose itself too much on peoples’ pockets.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich is really the most interesting aspect of the Galaxy Nexus however. Ice Cream Sandwich is not expected to be available for other Android phones until at least Q2 2012, although there is already a CyanogenMod version available for some Android phones like the Nexus S and Galaxy S.

One of the most talked about new features of Ice Cream Sandwich is the Face Unlock system. This joins the simple password and Pattern Unlock systems to provide users with another method to lock their phones to prevent other people from accessing them.

Although there are some reports that this system can be fooled by a photograph, either on paper or displayed on a phone or tablet screen, it is at least a pretty cool feature to be able to show off. As the other locking mechanisms are still available, you can always use them if you are really concerned about the security of Face Unlock.

Perhaps the most useful new feature included in the update is Android Beam. This is a wireless sharing protocol, a bit like Bluetooth, that operates on Near Field Communication (NFC). Using Android Beam you can share virtually anything on your phone, including web pages, contact details, pictures, music and video, simply by tapping your phone with another Ice Cream Sandwich device.

Siri and the new iOS 5 update for the iPhone 4S may be grabbing most of the news, but Ice Cream Sandwich offers a far superior operating system. Android is already the most popular mobile OS and the features added into Ice Cream Sandwich are likely to make it even more successful. Although the Galaxy Nexus itself will most likely never sell the same volumes as the iPhone 4S, the new features added to Android will be available in many more Android phones within the coming months – including new releases and existing devices like the Galaxy S2 and HTC Sensation.
